St. Luke of Crimea made an invaluable contribution to the victory in the Great Patriotic War by developing methods for the treatment of purulent wounds in the absence of antibiotics. Metropolitan Tikhon of Simferopol and Crimea stated this in an interview with Izvestia correspondent Anton Zolotnitsky on November 4.

"The uniqueness of this amazing man, this inimitable saint in the Russian Church, is that he was also a great surgeon, a man who not only performed thousands of operations and saved thousands and thousands of lives, but he wrote a wonderful book on medicine, Essays on Purulent Surgery. And it turned out to be extremely in demand during the Great Patriotic War," he said.

The Metropolitan noted that the work of St. Luke (Valentin Voino-Yasenetsky) became an invaluable guide for military doctors during the war years, when purulent wounds were a massive complication of gunshot wounds, and antibiotics were unavailable. Despite 11 years in prison and exile, the archbishop continued his medical work and received the Stalin Prize of the first degree for his contribution to saving the lives of Red Army soldiers.

According to Metropolitan Tikhon, St. Luke combined the service of the church with practical medicine, performing thousands of operations even during the years of repression.

On November 1, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a video message at the opening of the III Mercury 2025 Forum of young Diplomats that preserving historical memory and countering attempts to repeat the atrocities of the past is a sacred duty for Russians. She noted that in the year of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, one of the key topics of the forum will be the preservation of historical memory and countering the falsification of history.
