The media reported on Merz's plans to begin deporting Syrian refugees.
Refugees from Syria who currently live in Germany can be deported from the country, as there are no more reasons for their asylum - the civil war in their homeland is over. This was announced on November 3 by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, quoted by the Suddeutsche Zeitung (SZ).
"The civil war in Syria is over. Now there are no more reasons to grant asylum in Germany, and therefore we can start with repatriation. <...> We know that a very large part of Syrians want to return. We will contribute to this," he said at a press conference attended by Daniel Gunther, Prime Minister of the Federal State of Schleswig—Holstein.
The Chancellor added that he expects that a "significant part" of refugees will voluntarily return to Syria, driven by the desire to rebuild destroyed cities. According to Merz, Germany, which has over 951,000 refugees from Syria as of August 2025, will also contribute to this process.
On October 25, the Bild newspaper reported on a rally that began in the German city of Bielefeld, located in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, after Merz's words about the migration problem. It was clarified that, speaking about the work of the German government to improve the situation in the migration sphere, the Chancellor pointed to the persistence of the problem in the "appearance of cities." Therefore, the residents of the city came out to demonstrate under the slogan "We are the urban look!".
