- ANSA: Conti tower collapsed in the center of Rome, victims are being searched under the rubble
In the center of Rome, at the Imperial Forums, a part of the historic Torre dei Conti tower collapsed, rescuers are searching for victims under the rubble. This was reported on November 3 by the Italian news agency ANSA.
The tower, located in Largo Corrado Ricci Square, is currently undergoing restoration.
"After the first incident, a new avalanche of debris fell from the roof, creating a huge cloud of dust. A 64-year-old worker was rescued alive from the rubble and taken to hospital in critical condition due to a traumatic brain injury," the media reported.
Another worker is still under the rubble. Doctors reported that the man was conscious, but after the second collapse they had concerns for his health.
"One person is trapped, but we have evidence that he is still alive. All measures are being taken to save him, which is a priority, this is a difficult operation," said Rome Prefect Lamberto Giannini.
Also, during the second collapse of the building, one of the firefighters working to extract a worker from the rubble was injured. He was urgently taken to an ophthalmological hospital, the rescuer had eye irritation.
The collapse of the historic tower in the central squares of the ancient city in Rome was reported earlier on November 3 by the newspaper Corriere della Sera. The collapse occurred around 11:20 (13:20 Moscow time). Rescuers found that a worker of Romanian origin was trapped under the rocks, and a man was injured. The other four workers were rescued immediately. Firefighters from the SAF group are working at the scene, trying to reach the trapped man through a small window on the left side of the tower.
