Every year on November 4, the Orthodox Church celebrates the Day of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, one of the most famous and revered miraculous images in Russia. According to legend, it was this shrine that helped the people's militia led by Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky expel the Polish invaders from Moscow in 1612. The story of the miraculous finding of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God is closely connected with the incorporation of Kazan into Russia. In 1552, Tsar Ivan the Terrible organized a campaign against the Kazan Khanate to strengthen the country's eastern borders. The military campaign ended with an unconditional victory for the Russian army: the Khan's troops were completely defeated. Soon after, an archiepiscopal see appeared in Kazan, and construction of Orthodox churches and monasteries began.

In June 1579, Kazan suffered from a severe fire — many residential buildings burned down, and half of the Kazan Kremlin was destroyed. The fire broke out near the church of St. Nicholas of Tula, and local Muslims decided that it was the Almighty who was angry with the Gentiles. The authority of Christianity in the city was seriously undermined.

One day, a nine-year-old girl named Matrona, the daughter of one of the victims of the fire, Sagittarius Daniil Onuchin, had an unusual dream. The Mother of God appeared to her, telling her to dig up an icon hidden by secret Christians back in the days of Muslim rule. The girl told her parents about everything, but the adults did not believe her. However, the visions did not stop — the Mother of God appeared to Matrona three times.

Finally, Matrona's mother agreed to look for the icon with her daughter. Enlisting the support of the Kazan clergy, they began to dig in the indicated place and soon found the miraculous image. Under the leadership of Archbishop Jeremiah of Kazan, the shrine and the procession were moved to the Annunciation Cathedral, the first Orthodox church in Kazan. According to legend, many miraculous healings took place during the procession.

A detailed description of the miracles that accompanied the finding of the icon was sent to Moscow along with a list of the image. After reviewing the documents, Ivan the Terrible ordered the construction of a temple in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God at the site of the find and the establishment of a convent. Matrona and her mother became the first inhabitants of this monastery.

The Kazan icon of the Mother of God has acquired All-Russian veneration. The shrine played a special role in 1612, when its list inspired the people's militia led by Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky to liberate Moscow from the Polish invaders. After the victory, Pozharsky used his personal funds to build the Kazan Cathedral on Red Square to store the miraculous image.

In 1649, by decree of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, November 4 was established as a national holiday in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God and the liberation of Moscow. Since 2005, National Unity Day has also been celebrated on this date, symbolizing victory over the Polish invaders and friendship between the peoples of Russia.
