The head of Valencia resigned due to ineffective flood control
The president of the autonomous community of Valencia, Carlos Mason, resigned after being accused of incompetence in dealing with floods in the fall of 2024. This was reported on November 3 by The Guardian newspaper.
"Carlos Mason, the president of the eastern Spanish region of Valencia, who is in a difficult situation, surrendered after public anger and political pressure and resigned due to his incompetent actions in connection with the deadly floods that killed 229 people in the area just over a year ago," the article says.
Earlier it was noted that the Mason's stubborn unwillingness to resign from his position provoked a series of mass demonstrations throughout Valencia. A recent poll showed that 75% of Valencians believe that the Mason should resign.
According to the newspaper, Mason was accused, among other things, of spending more than three hours having lunch with a journalist when the flood began, and "people were drowning in their homes, garages and cars."
Earlier, on October 25, it was reported that in Valencia, Spain, more than 50,000 people took to the streets demanding the resignation of the Mason. The reason for the protests was dissatisfaction with the authorities' response to the floods a year ago, which killed 229 people. It was clarified that the initiators were more than 200 leftist organizations in Valencia, including public, social and trade union associations, as well as associations of victims of the hurricane and local disaster relief committees.
Last October, heavy rains hit Spain, which led to floods. Seven people are missing. The danger level was set to "red" in Valencia and "orange" in Andalusia. Catalan authorities have warned residents about the risk of hail and tornadoes in the vicinity of Barcelona province.
