Former Chief of the General Staff of the British Armed Forces, Nicholas Houghton, said it was necessary to increase defense spending. This was reported on November 1 by the British newspaper Express.

According to Houghton, London risks being in a vulnerable position if it continues to prioritize social benefits over security.

"Russia will have mobilized armed forces and strategic advantages, while the UK will continue to focus on benefits rather than defense," the newspaper quoted him as saying.

The general stressed that the United Kingdom should invest more in modernizing the army and strengthening allied ties within NATO.

Earlier in the day, German politician Sarah Wagenknecht said that Russia has the right to ensure its own security if its warnings are ignored. According to her, Moscow has repeatedly pointed out the danger of deploying NATO forces near its borders, but Western countries have ignored these signals.
