- FT pointed to the consequences of the anti-drug raid in Rio de Janeiro for Lula da Silva
The largest and bloodiest police operation against drug gangs in Brazil's history, conducted in Rio de Janeiro, turned into a political blow to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The Financial Times newspaper writes about this on November 2.
"Brazil's tough anti—drug raid demonstrates Lula's political weakness," the article says.
It is indicated that the president's reaction to the operation was delayed. According to the country's Ministry of Justice, Lula was not informed about the impending raid and learned about it from media reports. He later stated that he was "shocked by the death toll" and stressed that "organized crime destroys families and oppresses residents." However, this reaction was perceived as a sign of the federal government's detachment from internal security issues.
According to FT, opinion polls showed that 62% of Rio residents supported the police actions, which strengthened the positions of right-wing politicians who advocate harsh measures.
Analysts note that the events in Rio have revealed a systemic gap between the federal center and the regions. The leftists and centrists, led by Lula, have long relied on social programs and dialogue, but have not proposed an effective strategy to combat crime. As a result, the right-wing forces were able to present themselves as the only political force capable of "restoring order." Observers warn that without a review of the security policy, Lula's government risks losing control over a key issue for Brazilian society — the safety of citizens.
On October 28, about 2.5 thousand military and civilian police participated in an operation called "Deterrence", the purpose of which was to execute 100 arrest warrants for members of the Comando Vermelho criminal group. During the operation, 81 people were arrested, 10 rifles, a pistol and nine motorcycles were seized.
On October 29, the governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Claudio Castro, said against the background of deaths during a police operation in the favelas that he considered the actions of law enforcement officers successful. It is noted that after the operation, the bodies of more than 130 people were removed from the scene, but only 58 deaths were officially confirmed, including four policemen and 54 alleged criminals.
