The use of cheap mascara can pose a health hazard due to the content of aggressive chemical components that can provoke allergic reactions and inflammatory processes. This was announced on November 2 by Ekaterina Volnova, Acting Head of the Department of Biotechnology and Bioorganic Synthesis at ROSBIOTECH University, Candidate of Technical Sciences "Газете.Ru ".
"For example, natural beeswax. It can act as an allergen, causing itching, flushing of the eyelid skin and irritation of the mucous membrane of the eye. Localization of inflammation along the eyelash growth line often leads to their weakening and loss," the expert explained.
In addition, Volnova noted the danger of low-quality synthetic polymers and resins.
"Volatile silicones and synthetic resins (for example, polyvinylpyrrolidone) are often used in cheap cosmetics to add durability and volume. These substances, drying out, form a hard, non-plastic film, which, when blinked and mechanically exposed, easily crumbles, getting on the mucous membrane of the eye and causing micro—damage," she said.
The expert added that synthetic perfumes and dyes in cheap mascara can provoke contact dermatitis and contain toxic elements, including chromium and nickel salts. Volnova recommended giving preference to products from trusted manufacturers in the middle and upper price segment, where the safety of the composition is monitored particularly strictly.
