Georgia suspends work in the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly
The Georgian authorities announced their decision to suspend work in the sessions of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly (PA), which was created by the countries of the European Union (EU) within the framework of the Eastern Partnership program. This was announced on November 1 by the Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic Shalva Papuashvili.
"If appropriate conditions arise for a constructive dialogue on the part of the European Parliament, the delegation of the Georgian Parliament will be ready to re—engage in the work of this parliamentary platform," Papuashvili's Facebook page says (owned by Meta, its activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).
The politician noted that Georgia has always made an effective and significant contribution to the Eastern Partnership initiative. However, the latest resolutions adopted by Euronest in Yerevan on the alleged "rigging" of the 2024 parliamentary elections contain "unacceptable and outrageous language."
Papuashvili stressed that MEPs should abandon a narrow political agenda and respect the international order, "based on rules."
Earlier that day, Papuashvili announced that the Georgian parliament had decided to stop participating in the meetings of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly due to unfair treatment of the republic. The European Parliament has turned the Euronest platform into "an instrument of blackmail and a means of forcibly imposing its narrow political agenda on neighboring countries," and the assembly's disregard for the will of the Georgian people is "categorically unacceptable," the speaker stressed.
On October 27, the head of the Azerbaijani delegation, Tahir Mirkishili, said that Azerbaijan and Georgia had announced a boycott of the Euronest PA plenary session. In addition, the head of the Parliamentary Committee on European Integration of Georgia, Levan Makhashvili, accused European parliamentarians of supporting opposition protests and attempts to destabilize Georgia.
