MADI offered to conduct crash tests of electric scooters
Means of individual mobility (SIM) need to increase constructive safety, which can be achieved, among other things, through crash tests. This was announced on November 1 by Vitaly Gaevsky, Professor of the Department of Automobiles at MADI, Associate Professor, Doctor of Technical Sciences, as part of the round table "Roads of the Future: Safety and Innovations in Personal Mobility," Izvestia correspondent reports.
"It is necessary to carry out crash tests of this technique. This will make it possible to adjust the technical requirements for personal mobility equipment, increase their stability, and reduce the center of gravity. In the future, this will make it possible to develop SIM cards adapted for older people and people with disabilities," Gaevsky said.
According to the Russian Interior Ministry's BDD Research Center, 2,959 (-24.1%) accidents involving SIM users were registered in the Russian Federation in the first nine months of 2025. 54 people (+22.7%) died in such incidents, including five children under the age of 16.
During this period, 3,062 (-24.4%) people were injured, including 956 children under the age of 16. Of all those killed in an accident involving a SIM, 52 people (96.3%) were users of such devices, and three were passengers. The largest number of accidents involving personal mobility equipment was registered in Moscow, Kostroma region, St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod Region, Krasnodar Territory, Sverdlovsk, Omsk and Novosibirsk regions.
Earlier, on October 11, Svetlana Bessarab, a member of the State Duma Committee on Labor, Social Policy and Veterans' Affairs, in an interview with Izvestia, proposed tougher penalties for violators of the rules of using scooters. In her opinion, cases when scooters move at high speed among cars without using protective equipment such as helmets and knee pads are especially dangerous.
