Doctors dispelled myths about "cleansing" the liver
Liver detoxification has been a trend in recent years, however, according to doctors, popular cleansing methods offered by non—professionals are useless. The most effective way is not to try to help the liver, but to create conditions for its natural self—regulation. This was announced on November 1 by Delovoy Peterburg.
Vladimir Neronov, a gastroenterologist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), stated that the term "liver cleansing" is a marketing trick common in alternative medicine.
"Proponents claim that the liver accumulates toxins, slags and even stones that interfere with its normal functioning, causing fatigue, poor health, skin and digestive problems. In their opinion, regular "cleaning" helps to "remove" these substances and "unload" the organ," the specialist said.
According to Veronika Samoletova, gastroenterologist at the Lahta Clinic, "liver cleansing" often involves taking dietary supplements, medications, or other means. However, according to experts, the liver is the body's main filter and can purify itself.
Signs of "liver slagging," such as fatigue, skin problems, and bitterness in the mouth, have no scientific basis, explains Neronov. These symptoms are often a manifestation of other diseases such as biliary dyskinesia or stress. Genuine liver diseases are diagnosed by the results of laboratory tests, not by subjective feelings.
The portal drew attention to the fact that methods of "cleansing" the liver, such as tubage, which includes the use of vegetable oil, lemon juice and mineral water to stimulate bile production, are actively advertised on the Internet. However, according to Neronov, these techniques are not related to liver cleansing. Tubage can cause false "stones", and real gallstones do not dissolve in water and do not come out without pain. In addition, tubage is contraindicated in the presence of gallstones, as it can provoke an attack of biliary colic.
In addition, the biologically active additives (dietary supplements) promoted do not undergo such strict testing as medicines, which leads to risks.
"If they do work, it's more often as a placebo effect. In addition, dietary supplements generally do not undergo the same testing as medicines, they have a simplified registration system. Therefore, in fact, any components can be added to biologically active additives. Recently, it has very often happened that the composition on the packaging does not correspond to the real one at all," noted Samoletova.
Doctors emphasized that a balanced lifestyle is important to maintain liver health. Limiting the consumption of sugar, fried foods, fast food, alcohol and adding vegetables, fruits and proteins to the diet will help maintain liver health without extreme methods.
On October 18, Valeriya Lomova, a gastroenterologist at SM Clinic, told Izvestia that with regular alcohol consumption, the load on the liver increases many times, and serious disorders can develop over time. However, if the liver is not too badly affected, it is possible to restore its health. The first and most important condition for recovery is complete abstinence from alcohol. If at the same time a person is overweight, it is necessary to reduce it and review the diet.
