- WP has learned about the White House's restriction of media access to the West Wing premises
Reporters will no longer be able to access the premises in the west wing of the White House, where the offices of key employees of the communications department are located. This was reported on November 1 by The Washington Post (WP) newspaper with reference to the document.
"Reporters will no longer be able to access the room in the west Wing, known as the Upper Press, which houses the offices of key communications staff, which has provoked resistance from White House correspondents," the publication says.
According to the newspaper, press representatives were restricted access to the 140 office without prior permission. According to the White House, this decision was made for reasons of national security.
It clarifies that due to "recent structural changes" in the US National Security Council, the staff of the White House communications department will now regularly work with "confidential materials" in this part of the building.
At the same time, the White House Correspondents Association opposed this decision. The organization's president, Weijia Jiang, noted that the restrictions "will negatively affect freedom of access to information and transparency of government actions."
WP reported on October 15 that the Pentagon had set a number of conditions for the publications to continue their cooperation, which they refused, which led to the confiscation of passes from journalists. It was clarified that the ministry had introduced new rules for cooperation with the media, in particular, journalists were banned from requesting and limited access to information that the ministry does not officially provide, and they also lost the right to publish information without prior approval by the military department.
