The transition to 12-year schooling is irrelevant for Russia and may worsen the quality of education. This opinion was expressed by State Duma Deputy Anatoly Wasserman on Friday, October 31.

According to the politician, there are two reasons why in other countries there is a tendency to lengthen schooling.

"The first one is purely economic. When there are not enough jobs, there is a desire to reduce demand for them in order to avoid excessive tension in society. And extending schooling is one of the ways to keep young people away from the labor market," the MP explained in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .

He added that in Russia there have always been more tasks than people to solve them, so anyone can find socially useful work.

"The second reason is methodical. In Russia, the goal of education is to form a holistic picture of the world, the idea that all the diversity of phenomena and processes is the result of the interaction of a relatively small number of patterns," Wasserman said, adding that when there is no such picture, everything around is perceived as unrelated facts.

He also noted that memorization takes more effort and gives less results.

Earlier in the day, Vladislav Grib, Deputy Secretary of the Public Chamber of Russia, said that Russia was ready to switch to 12-year schooling. He noted that similar processes are already underway in technologically advanced countries, and it is important for Russian society to consider them.

Grib stressed that the transition to the new system would allow for the retention of teaching staff. In addition, it will also provide graduates with the opportunity to enter universities at the age of 18.

He noted that in fact, the elements of 12-year education are already being implemented in Russia. So, the final year of kindergarten can be considered as the zero grade. At the same time, Grib noted that there is a shortage of preschool places in small towns and rural areas.
