- Politico pointed to the consequences of improving relations between the United States and China.
The warming of relations between Beijing and Washington puts the interests of the European Union (EU) on the back burner, but gives European leaders time to develop a further strategy against the background of continuing disagreements with China. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on October 31.
"From the very beginning, [US President Donald] Trump positioned his trip to Asia as a G—2 summit, raising concerns that any deal would overshadow European interests," said David Taylor, director of policy and programs at Asia House.
The trade standoff between Beijing and Washington has demonstrated that European economies are particularly dependent and vulnerable to the risk of a reduction in Chinese supplies. Concerns about long-term and irreversible damage to the industry have forced the EU to take a more conciliatory position in the trade standoff with Beijing.
However, Chinese officials are unhappy with the slow and uncoordinated pace of negotiations with the EU, which is why Beijing has excluded Europe from its list of priorities.
"The EU is at best secondary, and maybe even third—rate, or even not considered at all as an issue for Washington and Beijing in these negotiations," said Jeremy Chan, senior analyst at Eurasia Group.
Sensing a decline in its influence, the EU is seeking to strengthen trade ties with other countries. The one-year pause in export controls agreed by Trump and Xi Jinping gives the EU time to implement this plan, the newspaper added.
The meeting of the leaders of China and the United States was held for the first time since 2019 on October 30 in South Korea and lasted 1 hour and 40 minutes. During the meeting, Trump said that warm relations had been built between the two countries. The leaders of the United States and China have already reached agreement on many issues, and this meeting contributes to the further development of relations.
On the same day, the leaders agreed on the need to strengthen bilateral cooperation in key areas such as trade, economy and energy. Xi Jinping noted that the sides exchanged views on important trade and economic issues and reached a consensus on their solution.
