The Stanislavsky and Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Musical Theater (MAMT) is hosting rehearsals of Pyotr Tchaikovsky's opera The Maid of Orleans. The premiere of the theater season will take place on November 28, 29 and 30, 2025. Alexander Titel became the main director and artistic director of the MAMT opera company. This was announced on October 31 in the press service of the theater.

"We strive to combine elements of the "theater of representation" and "theater of experience" in the production, as, in fact, in Tchaikovsky's score. Without abandoning pathos, but filling it with specific dramatic content. It is important to intone the current context, to connect the moments of mystery embedded in Tchaikovsky's libretto and music with modern perception. Our goal is to create a single artistic fusion that is both spectacular and truthful," he said.

At the center of the opera is the tragic and heroic image of Joanna, embodying the power of spirit and self—sacrifice. It combines at the same time a lyrical beginning and boundless courage, loyalty to one's duty, a harsh historical context — with mystical ecstasy and thirst for life. The production was also the result of the development of psychological drama in Tchaikovsky's work.

Musical director and conductor Christian Knapp noted the orchestra's special role in this opera, calling it "a full participant in the dramatic action." He added that the production should take place "in an organic combination of the director's idea, drama and musical fabric of opera productions."

Larisa Andreeva, Ekaterina Lukash and Anna Zagorodnyaya are rehearsing the title part. At the same time, the leading actors of the theater are involved in the performance — Andrey Baturkin, Anton Zaraev, Stanislav Lee, Evgeny Kachurovsky, Chingiz Ayusheev, Maria Makeeva and others, including young artists and participants of the MAMT internship program. Liwei Hou will make his debut on the MAMT stage as the Archbishop.

In July, the ancient Demyanovo estate hosted the Tchaikovsky Night Festival, which is dedicated to the 185th anniversary of Tchaikovsky's birth and the 175th anniversary of his younger brother Modest Tchaikovsky, the author of the libretto for the opera. As part of the project, the opera Iolanta was presented in the author's version by Yuri Bashmet, People's Artist of the USSR, Conductor and Hero of Labor of the Russian Federation.
