The Latvian Seimas (Parliament) voted to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention of the Council of Europe, aimed at protecting women from violence. This was announced on October 30 by the Delfi portal.

"On Thursday, October 30, in the second final reading, after hours of debate, the Seimas approved a draft law on denouncing the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, also known as the Istanbul Convention," the publication says.

It is noted that the discussion of the issue lasted more than 12 hours. The denunciation initiative was supported by the opposition parties United List, National Association, Stability, Latvia in the First Place and the Union of Greens and Peasants.

The parliamentarians who voted for withdrawal stated that the provisions of the Istanbul Convention contradict traditional family values, since the document treats the concept of "gender" not as a biological sex, but as a social construct, the publication explains.

On September 29, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law denouncing the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture. It was clarified that the reason for the withdrawal from the convention was the blocking by the Council of Europe of the process of electing a new member from Russia. In addition, ignoring the appeals of Russia is also indicated among the reasons.
