A wet laptop is not a verdict if you act quickly and correctly. Even a small amount of moisture can lead to a short circuit and serious damage. Artem Pishchulin, brand communications manager for the Russian computer manufacturer iRU, told Izvestia on November 6 how to save the equipment and what absolutely cannot be done in the first minutes.

"First of all, it is necessary to immediately disconnect the laptop from the network and remove the battery, if this is provided for by the design. This will prevent a short circuit that can cause the device to fail instantly. After that, it is better to turn the device with the screen down or into the "house" position so that the excess liquid flows out and does not penetrate deeper into the board. The main thing is not to try to turn on the device immediately, even if it seems that there is very little water," the expert said.

In addition, it is unacceptable to use a hair dryer or oven to speed up drying — high temperatures can melt parts and accelerate corrosion. Popular methods like drying in rice are also ineffective. It is better to leave the device in a dry, cool place or immediately take it to the service, where specialists will carry out disassembly, cleaning and diagnostics.

Pishchulin clarified that sugary drinks and coffee are especially dangerous — they leave traces, cause corrosion and can lead to a short circuit even after drying.

"It is better not to delay contacting the service for a minute. The longer the liquid stays inside, the higher the chance of corrosion and permanent damage. There are obvious signs that indicate that self-resuscitation attempts may be useless: if the laptop does not turn on, if the screen flickers, if there is a burning smell, if rust is visible on the contacts, or if the liquid was not water. In such cases, specialist intervention is necessary, otherwise the device may fail completely in a few days or weeks," the specialist said.

To avoid such situations, Pishchulin advised using moisture-proof bags and covers, as well as avoiding sudden temperature changes. When switching from cold to warm, it is worth giving the device 10-15 minutes to adapt to prevent condensation.
