The number of victims of the "Angarsk maniac" Mikhail Popkov has reached 91
In Angarsk, the investigation of another criminal case against the "Angarsk maniac" Mikhail Popkov has been completed. This was reported on October 31 in the press service of the Investigative Committee (IC) of Russia.
"Popkov fully admitted his guilt in the alleged act. The 61-year—old defendant is currently in custody," the Telegram channel said.
According to investigators, in August 2008, the accused met two unknown 27-year-old women. According to Popkov, they were under the influence of drugs. Then there was an argument between him and the girls, and the maniac strangled both with a rope.
The criminal case of the latest double murder has already been sent to court, the Investigative Committee of Russia noted.
The "Angarsk maniac" is considered the bloodiest criminal in the modern history of Russia. Popkov committed all his crimes in the Irkutsk region from 1992 to 2010.
In 2015, Popkov was convicted of 22 murders and received his first life sentence. He was sentenced for the second time three years later, when it was possible to prove his involvement in 59 more deaths.
In July 2021, the court sentenced Popkov to nine years and eight months in prison in the case of two more murders committed in 1995. He received his last sentence in November 2023, when he was sentenced to another 10 years in prison.
In January 2024, the press service of the regional prosecutor's office reported that Popkov had been transferred from Irkutsk to Mordovia, noting that he had been given a final sentence of life imprisonment to be served in a special regime colony.
On August 28, 2025, investigators filed another charge against Popkov over the murder of two women in 2008. Then he drove a car to the area where he met two women. In the process of getting acquainted, a conflict occurred between them, during which Popkov strangled one of the girls with a rope, and then killed the other in a similar way.
