Nagasaki mayor is outraged by Trump's order to resume nuclear tests
On October 31, the mayor of the Japanese city of Nagasaki, Shiro Suzuki, said that US President Donald Trump would be "unworthy of the Nobel Peace Prize" if nuclear tests in the United States were indeed resumed.
"This is completely unacceptable. If nuclear tests are indeed resumed immediately, it would be unworthy of the Nobel Peace Prize," Suzuki said on Asahi TV.
According to the mayor of Nagasaki, Trump's decision hinders people's aspirations to create a world free of nuclear weapons, including those who survived the atomic bombings.
On October 29, Trump posted a statement on his Truth Social network, where he announced that he had instructed the Pentagon to begin testing nuclear weapons "on an equal basis." According to the president, the process should begin "immediately." At the same time, earlier in the day, Trump refused to answer a question from reporters about the reasons for the start of weapons testing.
On October 30, the European Union called on the United States to comply with its international obligations regarding nuclear nonproliferation after the announcement of the resumption of nuclear testing. The representative of the European Commission (EC), Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, added that she appeals to both Russia and the United States.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, in turn, noted that if any country departs from the moratorium on nuclear weapons, the Russian side will act accordingly. Peskov also commented on Trump's statements that other countries are testing nuclear weapons, noting that if it concerns the test of the Burevestnik missile, then this is not a nuclear test.
In August 1945, the United States dropped atomic bombs on Japanese Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This is the only case of combat use of nuclear weapons in history, which claimed the lives of thousands of people. More than 200 thousand people became victims of the attack, and the list continues to grow.
