Die Welt reported on the defeat of Kai Kallas in the struggle for influence in the EU
The head of European diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, was defeated in an attempt to strengthen her influence in the structures of the European Union, having come into conflict with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. This was reported on October 29 by the German newspaper Die Welt.
According to the newspaper, Callas proposed appointing Martin Zelmayr, the former chief of staff of the head of the European Commission, one of von der Leyen's harshest critics, as her closest adviser. This move caused an extremely negative reaction in Brussels.
"Callas, apparently, underestimated the reaction that this personnel proposal would cause in numerous EU capitals and in von der Leyen: horror," Die Welt notes.
As a result, none of the influential EU states supported Callas, which led to a weakening of her political positions and a narrowing of the room for maneuver within the EU apparatus.
Earlier, on October 17, Politico reported that in Brussels they discussed the possible return of Martin Zelmayr to a senior position in the European External Relations Service under the leadership of Kai Kallas. At that time, EU diplomats had already expressed concerns that his appointment could exacerbate the contradictions between the European Commission and the union's foreign policy service.
