The European Union (EU) is not ready to accept Ukraine into its membership due to fear of competition in the domestic market. This opinion was expressed on October 30 by Senator Alexei Pushkov, commenting on the new trade agreement between the EU and Ukraine.

According to the parliamentarian, the document preserves the protection of European producers from cheap Ukrainian agricultural products.

"Presumably, without these protective provisions designed to protect European agricultural producers from unsolicited competition, it would not have been signed at all. Based on this, it does not look like the EU is ready to accept Ukraine into its membership — not in words, but in deeds," Pushkov wrote on his Telegram channel.

He added that if Ukraine joined the EU, such restrictions would become impossible.

"And then the Poles, Slovaks, French, and many others will bitterly regret the day when their governments agreed to its inclusion in the European Union," the senator concluded.

Earlier in the day, Pushkov also commented on the initiative of former NATO Commander-in-Chief James Stavridis, who proposed to send alliance troops to Ukraine. The senator called this plan an attempt to draw the country into NATO de facto without official membership, noting that it is the countries of the alliance, not the European Union, that provide military support to Kiev.
