WP learned about the training of US National Guard soldiers to suppress riots
The Pentagon has ordered thousands of National Guard troops to take courses over the next few months on how to conduct combat operations in the face of civil unrest. This was reported by The Washington Post on October 30.
"The Pentagon is reviewing plans for the use of [National Guard rapid reaction forces] to ensure their ability to assist federal, regional and local law enforcement agencies in suppressing civil unrest," the material says.
The rapid Reaction forces, recently formed as part of the National Guard, will train more than 23,500 fighters to suppress street protests. Most states will allocate 500 people, and only a few — from 250 to 450. The exercises are expected to be completed by April 1, 2026. Moreover, 200 people will be allocated from the formed contingent, who will undergo a separate training course on responding to nuclear threats and terrorist attacks.
On October 1, US President Donald Trump announced that he had sent National Guard units to Oregon due to "worsening lawlessness" and attacks against federal employees. After that, on October 4, Trump demanded that the Governor of Illinois, Jay B. Pritzker, introduce the National Guard to combat crime. In response, the head of the region explained that there was no need for such a measure.
On the same day, the court imposed a temporary ban on sending National Guard troops to Portland as part of Trump's anti-crime initiative. The lawsuit was filed by the leadership of the city and the state of Oregon. The temporary ban will remain in effect until October 18, but may be extended after that.
