The "protest of a million" Orthodox Jews began in Jerusalem
The "protest of a million" Orthodox Jews began on October 30 in Jerusalem, with thousands of believers heading to the Israeli capital by train due to road closures.
In the footage published by Izvestia, participants began a rally right in the lobby of one of the railway stations in Jerusalem.
"Thousands of Orthodox Christians arrive in Jerusalem by train. This is the only way to get to the Israeli capital at this hour due to the fact that the main road from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem has been blocked," Izvestia correspondent Nikita Kulyukhin reports.
He said that the ultra-Orthodox had come to a rally against conscription. The mobilization of believers is related to the shortage of military personnel in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) after the operation in Gaza.
"Some said that they prefer to leave Israel and go back to the United States or other countries, where they will be accepted and allowed to continue studying the Torah for the rest of their lives instead of working or serving in the army," the journalist noted.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that hundreds of thousands of Orthodox Jews in Jerusalem would take part in a spontaneous rally against conscription. To ensure security, the police have been placed on high alert. Jerusalem's Central railway station is closed for the duration of the rally, and the main highway connecting Jerusalem with Tel Aviv is closed to private transport in both directions.
