An Australian 17-year-old cricketer died after being hit in the neck by a ball.
A teenager in Australia has died after being hit in the neck by a ball during cricket practice. The Guardian newspaper writes about this on October 30 with reference to the Ferntree Gully Cricket club.
17-year-old athlete Ben Austin was practicing kicking a ball in Melbourne's east on Tuesday, but at some point it hit him in the neck.
He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and put on life support. However, the teenager died the next day.
"He was talented and popular in cricket and was a huge loss to our local community. I know how much this news will affect our community. We will provide any possible support to the cricket clubs," said Arnie Walters, president of the Cricket Association.
The club said in a statement that Austin trained with a helmet, but without special neck protection.
The article notes that a similar case occurred in 2014. Then 25-year-old Phil Hughes died from hitting the ball in the head during the match.
On the same day, the Iranian Volleyball Federation (IRIVF) announced that Saber Kazemi, an electrocuted volleyball player of the national team, was diagnosed with brain death. The athlete was not disconnected from life support devices, he continues to be in intensive care.
