- The political scientist predicted possible consequences for Hungary due to Orban's statements about the EU
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's decision to hold rallies against the EU's policy towards Ukraine is seen as an ambitious step towards regional leadership. On October 30, Yegor Dibrov, a political scientist and specialist in political and economic conflicts, told Izvestia.
"Brussels does not like the decision of the Hungarian Prime Minister, which means Orban will be under the gun, both indirectly and directly. The EU will exert all possible pressure on a supporter of a nationally oriented policy and a follower of US President Donald Trump's policy in Europe," the expert said.
In his opinion, if the conflict with Brussels continues, Hungary risks facing the threat of applying Article 7 of the Lisbon Treaty, which may lead to the suspension of certain rights of a member state, including the deprivation of the right to vote in the European Council.
"The situation is more complicated for Hungary and Orban. If he departs from the stated principles and a supporter of Brussels comes to replace him, Hungary will be covered by a political and migration crisis, and uncontrolled financing of Ukraine will begin. This and much more will affect Hungary's sovereignty and the financial situation of each of its residents," the political scientist noted.
In addition, the political scientist stressed that after Orban's announcement of the launch of a campaign against EU policy, Hungarian society was divided into supporters and opponents of this initiative, which worsens the current political situation. His actions resonate with those who do not want to finance the Ukrainian crisis and seek to focus on internal development. According to Dibrov, this situation is the result of the interaction of internal and external factors that are intensifying the confrontation in Europe.
"Dissatisfaction with Orban's initiative is demonstrated by supporters of the representatives of the opposition Peter Magyar's Respect for Freedom party. If he wins, Brussels will receive a strong financial instrument to continue supporting Kiev. Therefore, the victory of the Hungarian opposition is also a blow to President Trump in order to deprive him of an ally in the EU. The current events demonstrate the multilevel interweaving of political actors and interest groups," the expert concluded.
On the same day, Orban announced on his Facebook page (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation) the launch of a campaign against the EU's bellicose policy of supporting Ukraine. The actions will begin on November 15 in Gyor and will be held in four more cities until December 20.
Prior to that, on October 28, the Politico newspaper reported that Hungary intends to form a joint alliance with the Czech Republic and Slovakia within the European Union in order to develop a unified position skeptical of the policy of support for Ukraine. It is noted that such cooperation has already proved effective during the migration crisis, when the Visegrad Four group operated.
