A New York court has sentenced two alleged members of an Eastern European criminal organization to 25 years in prison for the attempted murder of Iranian journalist Masih Alinejad. This was reported on October 29 by ABC News channel.

Rafat Amirov and Polad Omarov were found guilty of murder for hire and attempted murder for the purpose of racketeering. The federal prosecutor's office said the men collaborated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in an attempt to silence critics of the regime in exchange for half a million dollars.

The prosecutor's office noted that Amirov and Omarov operated within the framework of a criminal organization linked to Iran and planned to use the reward to strengthen power and influence in the Russian mafia. According to the investigation, the mercenaries repeatedly followed the journalist and prepared for an attack on her home in Brooklyn in 2022.

Earlier, on October 11, it was reported that lawyers for Luigi Nicholas Mangione, accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, appealed to a New York federal judge to dismiss some of the charges, including the possibility of the death penalty. They disputed the use of testimony and evidence obtained without a warrant, and also noted that Mangione had not been read the rights before the interrogation.
