Lawyers for the International Automobile Federation (FIA), Formula 1 and former head of the organization Bernie Ecclestone have filed a statement in court that Brazilian racing driver Felipe Massa, who is seeking recognition as the champion of the 2008 season, is himself responsible for not receiving the title. This was reported on October 29 by the Reuters news agency.

"Massa has filed a lawsuit in the High Court of London for claiming that he should have won the 2008 championship, which he lost to Lewis Hamilton by a one—point margin, and is demanding about 64 million pounds ($85.9 million) plus interest," the publication says.

In the 2008 season, Massa lost to Lewis Hamilton in the fight for the title, only one point behind. One of the key ones was the race in Singapore, where Massa missed out on potential points after the crash of Nelson Piquet Jr.

Subsequently, Piquet said that the accident was intentional. In 2023, Ecclestone confirmed that he and former FIA president Max Mosley were aware of the incident, but did not take action.

The defendants' representatives in the London court insist that Massa had the opportunity to go to court back in 2008-2009, that his own mistakes caused the failure in Singapore, and that stripping Hamilton of his title would be unfair.

Court hearings in the case are scheduled to end on October 31, but a decision on the merits of the dispute will be announced later.

Felipe Massa's racing career ended in 2017. He played for the Ferrari team from 2006 to 2013, where in the first season his partner was Michael Schumacher.

Earlier, on October 20, the FIA press service reported that the Oracle Red Bull Racing team was fined 50 thousand euros following the results of the Grand Prix in the USA for violating safety rules on the race track. The incident occurred when one of the team members entered the closed area after the start of the race. It is noted that this man did not respond to attempts to stop him.
