Photographer Ivan Filatov (1860-1937) found two eras — the Imperial and the Soviet. For almost half a century, he has been documenting the life of the village of Izhevsk. Izhevsk became famous for the fact that its inhabitants, peasants, bought themselves out of serfdom from landowner Nikolai Demidov in 1832. This happened 29 years before the abolition of serfdom in the Russian Empire. Free Izhevsk flourished. There were several brick factories, three parish churches, an exemplary college, three schools, a public bank, and an insurance agency in the village.
