Turkey intends to award the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Antonio Guterres the 2025 Ataturk International Peace Prize. This was announced on October 29 by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, speaking in Ankara on the occasion of the celebration of Republic Day.

"We will present our Ataturk International Peace Prize to the UN Secretary General, Mr. Antonio Guterres. I express my gratitude to him for his efforts aimed at establishing peace and stability throughout the world," the Haberler portal quotes the head of state as saying.

The International Peace Prize named after the founder of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, is the official award of the State. It is awarded to individuals for services to peace, international friendship and goodwill in accordance with the Ataturk principle of "Peace at home, peace throughout the world."

Earlier in the day, South Korean President Lee Jae—myung awarded US President Donald Trump with the country's highest state award, the Order of Mugunhwa. The Order is awarded to the Presidents of South Korea and foreign leaders for "outstanding services in strengthening the state, ensuring peace and prosperity of peoples." The award may also be awarded to the spouses of foreign leaders. Trump became the first US president to be awarded such an order.
