Brazilian Ombudsman confirms death of 121 people in Rio de Janeiro
The number of victims of a large-scale police operation in the favelas of Aleman and Peña in Rio de Janeiro has reached 121 people. This was reported on October 29 by the G1 portal, citing the words of the US authorities.
"There were 4 police officers and 117 suspects. This is the deadliest operation in the history of the state," said Felipe Curie, Secretary of the civil Police.
About 2.5 thousand civilian and military police officers were involved in the operation, codenamed "Deterrence". The security forces used the tactics of the "Bowp Wall", blocking the criminals in the Serra da Misericordia area and forcing them into the forests.
On the morning of October 29, residents of the Pena favela found at least 74 bodies in the Vacaria forest area. The authorities confirmed the discovery of 63 bodies. All the dead were men. A forensic examination will be conducted to establish the connection between these deaths and the operation.
Governor Claudio Castro called the operation a success, stressing that only four dead policemen were "innocent victims." Public Security Minister Victor Santos described the damage as "minimal."
113 people were detained during the operation, including 33 criminals from other Brazilian states. A significant amount of weapons and drugs were seized.
