Stefanovic: Poseidon's main task is to defeat naval bases
The main task of the Poseidon underwater vehicle is to defeat naval bases and naval groups due to its ability to move at great depth at high speed. Dmitry Stefanovich, a researcher at the IMEMO RAS Center for International Security and co-founder of the Watfor project, told Izvestia on October 29.
According to the expert, Poseidon represents a "technological reserve" in case the likely enemy develops its missile and anti-submarine defenses. At the same time, Stefanovich did not rule out that in addition to hitting targets, the device can also perform reconnaissance missions and other functions.
"When they talked about Poseidon back in 2018, it was mentioned as a multipurpose ocean system. Accordingly, presumably, it can perform some other tasks besides delivering a nuclear charge. Maybe setting up minefields or reconnaissance missions," the expert said.
Earlier in the day, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the testing of the Poseidon. He noted that the power of the Poseidon underwater vehicle significantly exceeds the power of the promising Sarmat intercontinental missile. He stated that currently there are no analogues that would surpass the Russian Poseidon in terms of speed, depth or interception methods. At the same time, the reactor of the underwater vehicle is 100 times smaller.
Andrey Kartapolov, head of the State Duma Committee on Defense, noted that the Poseidon underwater vehicle is capable of disabling entire states. He stressed that the device has no analogues, as well as countermeasures in other countries.
