The Belarusian Foreign Ministry commented on Lithuania's closure of the common border
Lithuania has demonstrated its attitude to European values by closing checkpoints on the Belarusian-Lithuanian border. This was announced on October 29 by the press secretary of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry Ruslan Varankov.
"By closing the land checkpoints as a so-called "retaliatory measure", they clearly demonstrated their real attitude to European values <...> Given the scale of the planned financing of defense projects in Eastern Europe, we do not exclude that as a result of this artificially created crisis situation, we will learn about the next corruption schemes in the use of funds allocated by the EU."- he told the portal sb.by .
According to Varankov, if Lithuania and the European Union (EU) jointly want to put an end to the problem of smuggling, joint measures should be taken. To implement this, the press secretary proposed to establish cooperation, including information exchange between the relevant services.
Earlier in the day, Lithuania completely closed the border with Belarus for a month. We are talking about the Myadininkai and Shalchininkai checkpoints. It was noted that exceptions will be introduced at the Myadininkai checkpoint, in particular, for diplomats, as well as citizens of Lithuania and the EU. In addition, in exceptional cases, other persons will be able to cross the border through the mediation of the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
On October 27, it was reported that the state border with Belarus was closed indefinitely in response to incidents involving balloons allegedly flying from Belarusian territory. Thus, according to the Lithuanian authorities, freight transport will not be able to cross the border.
