"According to the prophet Hosea, the wheel says goodbye to the axle until spring," the people said. During the holiday, the men paid attention to the carts: they were carefully inspected, repaired and put away in sheds until the next warm season. The creaking of the wheels even suggested the future: if they rolled quietly during the trip, it promised a rich harvest next summer.

On Hosea the Wheeler, the ancestors also observed animals and natural phenomena in order to predict the weather for the near future. So, if the dogs were silent and the cats were sleeping a lot, they understood that it would soon get warmer.

Church holidays on October 30th

On October 30, the Orthodox Church commemorates the life and spiritual exploits of the Old Testament prophet Hosea. He was born in the 8th century BC in the Kingdom of Israel. At that time, his people turned away from the true God and became addicted to idolatry. The prophet Hosea, with his fiery sermons, denounced the iniquities of his fellow tribesmen and called them to repentance, predicting great calamities and captivity if they did not return to the faith of their fathers.

Almost a thousand years before the coming of the Savior, he, on the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, predicted the cessation of Old Testament sacrifices, the spread of true Knowledge of God throughout the earth, as well as the three-day Resurrection of Christ and victory over death. His prophecies became part of the Holy Scriptures. The prophet Hosea served God for more than 60 years and died at a ripe old age, leaving behind a rich spiritual legacy.

Also on October 30, believers honor the memory of St. Anthony of Leokhnov, Novgorod, who lived in the XVI–XVII centuries. Coming from a noble family of Tver boyars, he chose the path of hermit. Around 1556, he settled near Lake Ilmen, on Leokhnov, where, together with the hermit Tarasy, he founded a monastery in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord, which later became famous as the Leokhnov Antoniev Monastery.

St. Anthony lived to a ripe old age and acquired the gift of foresight. During the Swedish devastation in 1611, he was forced to move to Novgorod, where he died at the age of 85. Before his death, the saint predicted that his body would rest in the desert monastery he founded. The prediction came true: in 1620, his incorruptible relics were solemnly transferred to the revived Leokhnov desert, and upon their discovery, many miracles occurred, including the epiphany of the blind man.
