Russia has tested the Poseidon underwater vehicle, confirming the country's possession of unique weapons that have no analogues in the world. On October 29, Andrey Koshkin, head of the Department of Political Analysis and Socio-Psychological Processes at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, military expert, told Izvestia about the advantages of this underwater vehicle.

According to him, the Poseidon is an underwater drone capable of autonomously advancing to the shores of a potential enemy and remaining in "sleep" mode until receiving an activation command.

"The device can carry a nuclear warhead with a capacity of up to a megaton, which makes it an exceptionally formidable weapon. A special feature of Poseidon is its invulnerability to air defense and missile defense systems, which demonstrates Russia's technological superiority. The device has already been put into mass production and is being placed on specially equipped submarines," Koshkin said.

Western analysts, the expert said, characterize Poseidon as a "doomsday weapon," which indicates its strategic importance for ensuring Russia's national security.

Dmitry Stefanovich, a researcher at the IMEMO RAS Center for International Security and co-founder of the Watfor project, added that Poseidon is capable of moving at great depth at high speed, representing a technological reserve in case of the development of missile and anti-submarine defense of a potential enemy. The main objectives of the system are to defeat naval bases and naval groups. The expert also did not rule out that the multipurpose ocean system could perform other tasks, including reconnaissance missions and the laying of minefields.

"In addition, when Poseidon was mentioned back in 2018, it was referred to as a multipurpose ocean system. Accordingly, presumably, it can perform some other tasks besides delivering a nuclear charge. There may be mini-barrages or reconnaissance missions. In addition, this system requires a separate media. A special purpose is being built for him in a submarine, which is also an important point," Stefanovic added.

On October 29, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced during a visit to the P.V. Mandryk Central Military Clinical Hospital in Moscow that Russia had conducted tests of the Poseidon underwater vehicle. The Russian leader noted that for the first time it was possible not only to launch the device from a launch vehicle using a launch engine, but also to activate a nuclear installation that allowed the device to operate for a certain time.
