Lockheed Martin conducted the first flight of the experimental X5-9 aircraft
The American corporation Lockheed Martin, together with NASA, conducted the first test flight of the experimental supersonic aircraft X-59. This was announced on October 28 by the company's press service.
The tests took place in the area of the Lockheed Martin plant in Palmdale, California, and the flight was conducted normally. The aircraft was created as part of the Quesst program, which aims to develop technologies for "quiet" supersonic flight.
"We are thrilled that we were able to make the first flight of the X-59. This aircraft is proof of our team's innovation and expertise. We are proud to be at the forefront of a new era of quiet supersonic sound," said O. J. Sanchez, Vice President of Skunk Works.
A distinctive feature of the X-59 is its design, which allows it to move faster than sound without the characteristic loud clap. NASA expects that the tests of the aircraft will help in the future to lift the ban on flights of commercial supersonic airliners over land, which has been in force in the United States for more than 50 years.
Earlier, on October 10, ABC News reported that NASA equipment the size of a car landed on a field in Texas. According to the agency, a device from a research balloon launched in New Mexico fell in the western part of the state. NASA confirmed that the equipment was used for scientific purposes and did not pose a danger.
