The German defense concern Rheinmetall, together with MBDA Deutschland, completed the marine testing phase of the new laser system and handed it over to the military technical department WTD 91 in Meppen for further tests. As reported on October 28 in a Rheinmetall press release, deliveries of a combat-ready version of the weapon to the German Navy may begin as early as 2029.

"A combat-ready laser weapon system may be available to the German Navy from 2029. It will be an effective and economical addition to guided missiles," the company noted.

During the year, the so-called laser demonstrator was tested on board the frigate Sachsen ("Saxony"). According to Rheinmetall, the system is designed to neutralize drones, small surface targets, boats and guided missiles at close range. In the future, after modernization, it will be able to hit supersonic missiles and artillery shells.

Earlier, on July 3, it was reported that the heads of the largest German corporations, including Rheinmetall, Thyssenkrupp, Lufthansa and DHL, met with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. Business leaders called for a change in the EU's economic policy, expressing dissatisfaction with US duties, climate protection measures and the growth of bureaucracy.
