The doctor spoke about the connection between alcohol consumption and cancer
Alcohol acts as a toxic substance for the body's cells, causing DNA damage and disrupting their natural repair processes, and with excessive alcohol consumption, these damages accumulate and over time can lead to cancer. Mikhail Kutushov, a toxicologist, told about this on Tuesday, October 28.
According to him, the organs of the digestive system are particularly sensitive to this effect: the oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus and liver, where ethanol is metabolized and where its decomposition products accumulate. The doctor added that other organs are also affected.
"Studies show an increased risk of breast, pancreatic, and even colon cancer in people with a habit of regular alcohol consumption," the toxicologist said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .
The expert clarified that even moderate doses of alcohol can slightly increase the risk, and systematic abuse poses a serious threat. At the same time, the combination of alcohol with smoking or poor nutrition increases the carcinogenic effect.
"It is important to note here that the effect of alcohol manifests itself gradually: cells can compensate for damage for a long time, and only after years clinical manifestations of malignant processes appear," Kutushov explained.
The toxicologist warned that regular and excessive alcohol consumption directly increases the likelihood of developing cancer. Understanding this connection is important for prevention: alcohol restriction, and ideally complete abstinence, reduces the burden on the body and reduces the likelihood of dangerous diseases, which are often recalled only when treatment becomes difficult and lengthy, Kutushov concluded.
On October 15, Olga Ulankina, an expert at the Hemotest laboratory, told RT that any alcohol contains ethanol, which can damage the DNA of cells. There is no "safe" alcohol, the doctor emphasized.
Earlier, on September 10, Kutushov warned that processed meat such as bacon, ham, sausages, sausages and other products that have been industrially processed with the addition of salt, nitrites and preservatives may be dangerous to health.
He explained that their regular consumption increases the burden on the cardiovascular system, increases the risk of cancer, especially intestinal cancer, and also contributes to the development of obesity and type 2 diabetes.
In turn, Elena Andreeva, director of the Institute of Reproductive Medicine at the State Scientific Center of the National Research Institute of Endocrinology of the Russian Ministry of Health, called obesity and alcohol consumption the main factors in the development of breast cancer, the Moscow City News Agency reports.
