The U.S. government and Westinghouse have announced an $80 billion strategic agreement to build new nuclear reactors. The Financial Times newspaper writes about this on October 28.

"The investment will allow the construction of about eight new Westinghouse AP1000 power plants or a combination of larger power plants and small modular reactors," the material says.

The deal was concluded against the backdrop of the ambitious US goal to increase nuclear capacity fourfold by 2050, that is, to 400 GW, as instructed by President Donald Trump in May.

Earlier, on October 16, the head of the US Department of Energy, Chris Wright, said that about 100 thousand contractors upgrading the US nuclear arsenal could be left without payment due to the shutdown. Later, CNN reported that the vast majority of employees of the federal agency for the supervision of the nuclear potential of the United States will be sent on leave at their own expense amid the ongoing government shutdown.
