Like Wikipedia, only better: Musk launched Grokipedia
Entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced the launch of Grokepedia, an analogue of the world's most popular online encyclopedia Wikipedia. About how Grokepedia differs from Wikipedia, how to use Musk's library, and why the billionaire created an alternative to Wikipedia, see the Izvestia article.
What is "Grokepedia"?
American billionaire and founder of Tesla, Space X, Elon Musk has launched an analogue of Wikipedia— Grokepedia. According to the entrepreneur, the current version of his online encyclopedia is imperfect, but it is better than Wikipedia.
"Version 0.1 Grokipedia.com already available. Version 1.0 will be 10 times better, but even version 0.1, in my opinion, is better than Wikipedia," the businessman wrote on the social network.
Grokipedia operates on the basis of the Grok neural network, which belongs to the xAI project founded by Musk. At the moment, more than 885 thousand articles are available in the businessman's online library.
Grokipedia is free for all users. As Elon Musk reported, Grokipedia.com completely open source code.
What can Grokepedia do and how to use it
The online encyclopedia is available to all users, including those from Russia. However, some of them complained about errors related to the loading of the site. At the time of writing this article, the author had no problems logging into the resource.
Grokipedia is an online encyclopedia that contains articles on various topics. There was no material on what "Grokepedia" was at the time of the library's launch. Articles about Wikipedia have been published on the resource.
To find the texts, you need to enter a query in the search bar on the main page of Grokepedia. After entering a query, the algorithm, like browsers, offers options for questions. For example, when searching for "Wikipedia", "Grokipedia" gives the following options: "Wikipedia", English "Wikipedia", the list of Wikipedia mobile applications, the history of Wikipedia, the reliability of Wikipedia. After clicking on the query, the encyclopedia provides an article. It is indicated above that the facts in the text are verified by the Grok neural network. On the left side of the page with the open article is the table of contents. At the end of the text, as well as after the abstracts in the article itself, there are links to sources.
Why Musk launched Grokipedia
The American entrepreneur launched Grokepedia as an analogue of Wikipedia, which he has been criticizing for more than a year.
In October 2023, NewsGuard, a company that verifies the reliability of information and compiles such ratings, published data monitoring. In it, the social network Mask X and the entrepreneur personally were accused of spreading fakes about the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
"Elon Musk has updated the platform's verification system, allowing users to display a blue checkmark in their profile for $8 per month and receive priority from the algorithm. This means that their posts will be displayed higher in the search results. This decision turned out to be in the hands of scammers spreading disinformation about the war between Israel and Hamas," NewsGuard said in a statement.
After this statement, the billionaire sharply criticized Wikipedia, pointing out that Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales is one of the members of the NewsGuard advisory board. In addition, after the 2023 presidential elections in Turkey, X deleted the profiles and posts of opposition politicians at the request of the Turkish authorities, and Wikipedia refused to do this.
In December 2024, the billionaire responded to Wikipedia's budget report for 2023-2024, which stated that of the $177 million, about 50% would be spent on infrastructure development, 20% on efficiency, 17.6% on "equality," and 11.6% on "security and inclusivity." Musk wrote on his social network that it was time to stop making donations to Wikipedia until it "restores the balance in editorial powers." In addition, the businessman offered to pay $1 billion to rename Wikipedia into something consonant, but completely indecent in sound.
After the conflict with Wikipedia, Musk announced that he would create his own online encyclopedia. As the entrepreneur said, Grokepedia reflects the truth, unlike its analogues.
How does Grokepedia differ from Wikipedia
The main difference between Grokepedia is that the texts in it are generated and verified by a neural network. Wikipedia articles are written and edited by people.
The Mask library also has a different design and functionality. To find something in Grokepedia, you first need to go to its website, then write a query in the search bar.
In addition, while Grokipedia is losing to Wikipedia in terms of the number of texts. If there are 885 thousand of them in Grokepedia, then there are 7-8 million in Wikipedia.
What is Wikipedia?
Wikipedia is the largest and most popular online encyclopedia in the world. It was founded in 2001 by entrepreneur Jimmy Wales and scientist Larry Sanger.
In 2003, the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation was established, which exists on donations and grants.
There are articles with errors on Wikipedia. This is due to the fact that anyone can write an article to the library. In addition, due to the large flow of texts, editors do not always have time to check the materials qualitatively.
