Overchuk pointed to Russia's interest in expanding trade with Cambodia
Russia has expressed interest in increasing trade with Cambodia and is ready to help ensure the country's food and energy security. This was announced on October 28 by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk at a meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet at the 20th East Asia Summit.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the current state and prospects for the development of bilateral trade and economic cooperation, including the implementation of joint projects in energy, agriculture and industry.
"We are interested in increasing trade with Cambodia and balancing export and import supplies. We have a lot to offer you. Russia is ready to help ensure the food and energy security of the Kingdom of Cambodia," Overchuk was quoted as saying on the Russian government's website.
At the meeting, special attention was paid to the possibilities of increasing the supply of Russian fertilizers to Cambodia, as well as expanding cooperation in the field of seed production and agricultural products. Hun Manet welcomed the interest of Russian companies in working in the Cambodian market and expressed his willingness to facilitate the organization of necessary bilateral contacts.
One of the topics of the negotiations was the improvement of transport connectivity between states and the development of new logistics chains. Prospects for the development of partnership both in a bilateral format and within the framework of multilateral associations were also discussed.
At the end of the meeting, an agreement was reached to continue contacts at the government level and enhance cooperation between the business communities of the two countries.
On September 26, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the development of bilateral relations between the two countries with his Cambodian counterpart Prak Sokhon. During the meeting, the sides exchanged positions related to current international issues, as well as the regional agenda.
Later, on October 28, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko told Izvestia about the details of the negotiations between Russia and Cambodia. Within the framework of them, the topic of creating a free trade zone with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) was raised. According to the diplomat, Cambodia's accession to the BRICS was not discussed in Kuala Lumpur.
