More than 100 former officials of the US Department of Justice have appealed to the federal court of Virginia to drop the criminal case against former FBI Director James Comey, accusing the administration of President Donald Trump of "vindictive persecution." This was reported on October 27 by The Washington Post (WP).

In a memo filed with District Judge Michael Nachmanoff, former officials emphasized that the charges against Comey violate the norms of impartial justice. Among the signatories of the document are former Attorney General under Barack Obama Eric Holder and a number of high—ranking lawyers who served in various administrations.

"The totality of these circumstances indicates that the indictment was not a manifestation of an impartial judgment, but an act of personal retaliation on the part of the president," the statement said.

Former Justice Department lawyer James Pierce noted that the charges against Comey look like "prosecution of a political enemy" and do not meet professional standards.

Earlier, on October 20, The Washington Post reported that James Comey had filed a motion with the court to dismiss the criminal case, calling it politically motivated. His lawyers said that the charges were initiated personally by Trump and based on erroneous data, and also challenged the legality of the appointment of the prosecutor leading the case.
