Teachers faced difficulties in switching to the Estonian language of instruction in schools. Due to the lack of educational materials, teachers themselves are forced to create textbooks adapted for Russian-speaking students. This was announced on October 22 by the ERR TV and radio company portal.

Students in the fourth and fifth grades face particular difficulties, where it is very difficult to switch to the official language of instruction.

Fifth grade homeroom teacher Elise Muir of Mahtra Primary School said that the students have motivation, but learning problems remain.

"They don't have a basic vocabulary to rely on when studying topics. When we started in the fourth grade, words like "hello" or "goodbye" were already causing difficulties," says Muir.

It is noted that there are still not enough educational materials suitable for Russian-speaking students, so many teachers have to create them themselves.

"I still very often make all the training materials myself, from slides to worksheets. In some subjects, I don't have any workbooks at all that would correspond to the level of the students," explained Muir.

The publication reports that, according to the assessment of the Ministry of Education, the second academic year of the transition to teaching in the Estonian language has begun quite successfully. But the department recognizes that there really are not enough auxiliary materials, and now they are doing everything possible to improve the situation.

Earlier, on October 6, Konstantin Zatulin, first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Affairs, submitted to the House of Parliament a bill that provides for exemption from passing the Russian language proficiency test when enrolling in schools for children participating in the program for the resettlement of compatriots. It is proposed to amend the law "On Education in the Russian Federation". The innovations exempt children from the test when they enroll in schools from citizens of countries where Russian is the official language.
