Szijjarto ruled out Ukraine joining the EU under the current Hungarian government
Negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union (EU) will not begin under the current Hungarian government headed by Prime Minister Viktor Orban. This was announced on October 27 by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto during a speech in parliament.
"You can be sure that as long as I am foreign Minister and Viktor Orban is prime Minister, Ukraine's accession to the EU will not begin," Szijjarto said. His speech was broadcast on the Hungarian Parliament's YouTube channel.
This is how the diplomat answered a question from one of the parliamentarians about Hungary's position on Ukraine's accession to the European Union.
Szijjarto said in an interview with The Washington Times (WT) on October 22 that EU elites are trying to avoid any initiatives that could lead to peace in Ukraine. According to him, Europe is now "dominated by military psychology." The Minister also stressed that Budapest is always ready to mediate in negotiations and maintains open channels of communication with Moscow.
On September 25, the head of the office of the Hungarian Prime Minister, Gergei Guyash, said that Kiev's behavior did not correspond to the status of a candidate for EU membership. He said that Ukraine is unworthy to be a member of the EU, as it endangers the energy security of the community's states by undermining the Nord Stream gas pipeline.
