Szijjarto declared Hungary's readiness to host the Russia—US talks at any time.
Hungary is ready to host negotiations between the leaders of Russia and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, on a peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian crisis at any convenient time. This was announced on October 27 by the country's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto.
"Hungary is ready to host the US-Russian peace talks at any time. During my talks in the United States last week, it became clear to me that the Americans had not at all given up on the possibility of holding a peace summit," the head of the department said at a press conference in Budapest.
He added that Hungary is continuing preparations for the Russia—US summit, but it is necessary that peace be achieved after the talks. Currently, the only question is about the timing of the meeting.
"The question is when preparations will reach the stage where such a peace summit can bring tangible results so that peace can finally return to Central Europe," Szijjarto said.
The day before, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Trump was the first to say that there was no point in holding a summit in Hungary yet, and Russian President Putin agreed with him. He also added that the leaders of the two countries cannot meet just for the sake of meeting, this requires appropriate training.
On October 16, Trump announced a meeting with Putin, which was to take place in Budapest this week. However, on October 22, the American leader said that the planned negotiations would not take place, as it was "not the right moment." Later, on October 24, Peskov noted that in order for the negotiations to become effective, work must first be done at the level of the Russian Foreign Minister and the US Secretary of State.
