Finnish Prime Minister Orpo allowed the possibility of opening the border with Russia
Finland may consider opening the border with Russia. This was announced on October 26 by the country's Prime Minister Petteri Orpo.
"In the future, the government may consider opening one of the border posts on the border of Finland and Russia," Yle quoted him as saying.
He noted that for this, the Russian border guard service allegedly needs to return to the previous practice, in which both countries do not allow people to pass without proper documents. According to Orpo, at the moment there are no prerequisites for a change in the situation.
The Iltalehti newspaper reported on August 21 that the Finnish authorities intend to erect fences at the "closest possible" distance from the border with the Russian Federation, which will be equipped with cameras, sensors and loudspeakers.
On April 16, the Finnish government decided to keep the border with Russia closed until further notice. The new resolution, as specified, replaced a similar decision dated April 4, 2024.
