- The scientist called the object flying over Moscow and the Moscow region space debris.
The flying object that was visible in the night sky over Moscow and the Moscow region the day before was most likely space debris. This opinion was shared with Izvestia on October 27 by Professor of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Physico-Mathematical Sciences Sergey Bogachev.
Earlier, footage circulated online in which local residents of the capital and the region captured a bright fiery object with a long plume with a greenish glow. However, some have suggested that it was a meteorite.
"I would say it's garbage, because [the object] is very actively crushed in flight. The green color gives nickel. It is found both in meteorites and in human—made products," the scientist believes.
According to Bogachev, such an object would not have been able to reach Earth "almost certainly."
On October 17, Svyatoslav Litvinov, Associate Professor of the Department of Radioelectronic Systems and Complexes at RTU MIREA, noted that the probability of large asteroids falling to Earth in the near future is close to zero. He clarified that at the moment all known asteroids, including those whose approach is reported in the news, have a zero risk index on the Turin scale.
All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
