- The Kurdistan Workers' Party has announced the withdrawal of all its forces from Turkey.
The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK, recognized as a terrorist organization in Turkey) announced the beginning of the withdrawal of its forces from Turkish territory as part of the process of the agreement on the disarmament of the group. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on October 26.
The PKK statement said that the withdrawal of troops is proof of the PKK's commitment to the disarmament process. The party called on Ankara to help the movement "integrate into the peaceful political life of Turkey."
Earlier, the media reported that in November 2024, one of the close allies of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan suggested that PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, who is in prison in Turkey, order his militants to stop the armed struggle 10 years after the failure of the previous peace process between Turkey and the PKK.
In October 2023, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that more than 160 PKK militants and 190 facilities had been destroyed during Turkish Armed Forces operations in Syria since October 1. He noted that Turkey would not allow the creation of a "terrorist corridor" near its southern borders.
The PKK was founded in 1978. The party adheres to the ideas of Marxism-Leninism, at first it advocated an independent state of the Kurds (Kurdistan), but then began to put forward relaxed demands for the expansion of the rights of the Kurds and their autonomy in the south-east of Turkey. The armed conflict with the Kurdistan Workers' Party began in Turkey in 1984 and resumed in 2015. In 2015, the PKK and Ankara attempted reconciliation, but it failed, leading to a new surge in violence. It has spread not only to the south-east of Turkey, but also to the country's major cities. The party's bases are located in northern Iraq, against which the Turkish Armed Forces are conducting air and ground operations.
