The Belgian minister opposed the EU's appropriation of Russian assets
The use of frozen Russian assets for the needs of Ukraine will create a "precedent with potentially huge consequences." This was announced on October 24 by the head of the Belgian Ministry of Defense, Theo Franken.
"The problem is that this sets a precedent with potentially huge consequences," he said on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
Franken also noted that the seizure of Russian assets casts doubt on the reliability of the Belgian financial institution Euroclear. He explained that such a development could create a good opportunity for anti-Western countries to reconsider the principles of international capital movement.
On October 24, Reuters reported that Belgium did not support the initiative of the European Union (EU) countries to seize frozen Russian assets for their further transfer to Ukraine. However, according to the agency, the country called for keeping Russia's assets frozen until the conflict is over.
