The US Treasury Department announced the imposition of sanctions against the Colombian president and his family.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro, his family members and supporters have been placed on the U.S. Treasury Department's sanctions list, as a result of which all their property located in the United States will be blocked. This is evidenced by the relevant documents published on October 24 on the agency's website.

"The Office of Foreign Assets Control of the United States Department of the Treasury (OFAC) introduces Colombian President Gustavo Petro to the sanctions list, <... He also includes several supporters of Gustavo Petro on the sanctions list, namely his wife, son and a close associate. All the property <...> described above, which is located in the United States <...>, is blocked," the statement said.

It also notes that these measures also apply to any organizations that directly or indirectly, "individually or collectively," belong to 50% or more of Petro or his associates included in the lists.

The relevant decision, as explained, was made due to the alleged failure of the head of Colombia to fulfill his duties to control drug trafficking passing through his country.

On October 20, the head of the White House, Donald Trump, announced that he considers Petro to be involved in the drug situation in Colombia "out of control." He called the Colombian leader crazy and said that Washington was not going to put up with the alleged mass production and export of cocaine.

Later, on October 24, Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth announced that the United States had carried out an airstrike on a ship allegedly belonging to drug traffickers in the Caribbean Sea, which washes Colombia in the north. According to him, there were six male drug terrorists on board the ship during the attack - all of them were killed. At the same time, earlier, on October 18, the President of Colombia announced that one of these strikes had hit a civilian boat.
