A criminal case has been opened in the Trans-Baikal Territory after the ceiling collapsed at a school that underwent major repairs two years ago. This was announced by the regional SU of the Investigative Committee of Russia on Friday, October 24.

We are talking about school No. 14 in the city of Baley. According to the prosecutor's office, a plaster layer collapsed from the ceiling in one of the classrooms. At that moment, eight schoolchildren and a teacher were in the room, who led the children out of the classroom.

The Investigative Committee opened a criminal case under Part 1 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Provision of services that do not meet safety requirements").

"The school premises will be inspected, the management and staff of the educational institution will be questioned. The investigators will also seize and examine documents on the ongoing repair work, and interrogate representatives of the contractor organization. Documents are being prepared for the appointment of a forensic examination," the IC said in a statement.

According to ChitaMedia news agency, two years ago, school No. 14, built in 1960, underwent major repairs. However, according to the prosecutor's office, plastering the ceiling in classrooms was not part of the work.

An inspection will now be carried out in the building. The district administration has set up a commission, and construction control specialists have also been called in. The Prosecutor's Office submitted a submission to the head of the administration demanding that violations in the maintenance of property, monitoring of its condition and ensuring the safety of the educational process be eliminated.
